A Hanalei Bay Wedding for the ages

As a California and Hawaii wedding photographer, I never know what kind of love story I'll be capturing next. But when I received a request to photograph a Kauai wedding in Hanalei Bay, between a talented artist and a local islander who had met at Burning Man, I knew it would be a truly unique experience.  I mean, what better combination to host an epic wedding.

As I arrived on the island, I was struck by the sheer natural beauty of Kauai. As a wedding photographer in Kauai, I knew that the lush greenery, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic mountain ranges provided a breathtaking backdrop for the couple's big day. But it was not just the scenery that made this wedding special - it was the couple themselves.

The groom had flown in several of his artist friends to create a custom mural as a backdrop for the ceremony, a vivid and colorful addition to the already stunning setting, and a perfect reflection of the couple's eclectic personalities. The bride, who hailed from the island, had infused her love of the outdoors and her place of birth into the decor. As a Hawaii wedding photographer, I appreciated the delicate touches of local flora throughout the reception area, and the couple's exchange of leis during the ceremony as a nod to traditional Hawaiian culture.

However, what stood out to me was the couple's palpable chemistry.  As the sun set over the ocean and the party moved into full swing, I captured countless candid moments of the couple and their guests dancing, laughing, and celebrating. What made the wedding even more magical was that the officiant was none other than the renowned reggae artist, Pato Banton. The couple, both big fans of his music, had reached out to him and he had graciously agreed to not only officiate the ceremony but also to perform at the reception, filling the air with his uplifting rhythms and getting everyone up on their feet.

As a wedding photographer in Hawaii, it is moments like these that make me feel incredibly lucky to do what I do. Being able to capture the unique love stories of couples from all over the world, in all kinds of settings, is what makes my job so fulfilling. And this Kauai wedding in Hanalei Bay, with its stunning setting, unique couple, and enchanting entertainment by Pato Banton, will always hold a special place in my heart.
